Seumas O’Kelly Players to stage ‘Big Maggie’
The Seumas O’Kelly Players present Big Maggie by John B Keane for three nights only in the Temperance Hall, Loughrea Thursday March 1st, Saturday March 3rd and Sunday March 4th at 8pm.
When the play was written it was set in the present day, in 1960’s rural Ireland. The truth with which John B Keane underpins each of the characters in the play is a reflection of that. The play created great controversy at the time and that vibrancy and crackle continues through to this day. The result is a compelling journey through the Irish soul in what remains one of John B. Keane’s most popular plays.
Maggie Polpin is a widowed mother of four living in rural Ireland, now sole owner of the Polpin family shop and farm since the death of her husband. We follow Maggie Polpin from her husband’s burial as she battles to hold her own in a world of money, sex, and fear, against the expectations of her children and all around her.
Big Maggie is a compelling portrayal of a woman who is determined to take back control of her life, and it remains one of the greatest roles in Irish drama for any actress.
