Loughrea Seal Another Galway Hurling Final Place

Loughrea One Win Away from Historic Three-in-a-Row

Loughrea are just one win away from a third consecutive Galway Senior Hurling Championship title after a strong finish saw them defeat Craughwell 0-20 to 0-15 at Kenny , Athenry, on Sunday afternoon, 18 October.

The reigning champions looked in trouble with ten minutes remaining, trailing 0-14 to 0-11, but showed their experience and composure when it mattered most, scoring nine of the final ten points to secure a five-point victory.

Craughwell had worked their way back into the game after Loughrea made a bright start, with the sides level on several occasions during an entertaining first half. Loughrea held a narrow 0-10 to 0-9 advantage at the break, but Craughwell moved ahead in the second half through a series of Ciaran Leen frees.

With the game hanging in the balance, Loughrea found another gear in the closing stages. Substitute Jack Shaughnessy proved a key figure, landing four points after coming off the bench, while Tiernan Killeen, Cullen Killeen and Jamie Ryan also contributed crucial scores.

Anthony Burns marked his return from injury with a first-half point, while Martin McManus, Johnny Coen and Caimin Killeen were among those to get Loughrea on the scoreboard during the opening exchanges.

Despite Craughwell’s late lead, the champions remained patient and made the most of their scoring opportunities to turn the game around. Their wider spread of scorers ultimately proved decisive, with Craughwell relying heavily on Leen’s placed balls for much of their tally.

The result sends Loughrea into their third successive Galway Senior Hurling Championship final, where they will face Tommy Larkins in two weeks’ time. The sides previously met in the opening round of the championship, with Tommy Larkins coming out on top, setting up another intriguing meeting with a county title on the line.

With another final secured, Loughrea now have the chance to keep their three-in-a-row ambitions alive and take another step towards retaining their Galway crown.
