Cannon’s Dáil Plea for Improved Public Transport Links Between Loughrea and Galway City

In a passionate address to the Dáil on Tuesday night, Ciarán Cannon TD, representing the Galway East constituency, highlighted the pressing issue of inadequate public transport connections between Loughrea and Galway City. The deficit, he argued, has been a longstanding concern for the residents of Loughrea, impacting their daily lives since the abrupt discontinuation of Bus Éireann’s X20 expressway service in July 2021. Bus Éireann defended their decision to withdraw the service, citing commercial viability issues and an inability to sustain the route.

Since the cancellation of the X20, Loughrea and its immediate vicinity, home to approximately 8,000 residents, have grappled with severely limited public transport options. The absence of any service connecting Galway City and Loughrea after 6:30 pm has become a major inconvenience for the community.

Cannon emphasised the gravity of the situation, asserting that the lack of accessible public transport is not just an inconvenience but a substantial barrier for the residents of Loughrea. He pointed out that the community has been enduring this challenge for over two years, and it’s high time for a solution.

In his concluding remarks, Cannon appealed to: “Put in place an adequate, that is all we are asking for, bus and public transport link between Galway City and a town approaching 8,000 people so that people can get home after 6.30 pm in the evening. It can’t be that difficult to achieve in a country with the resources we have and the clever people we have working in the provision of Public Transport.”

As the debate over the deficit in public transport links gains momentum, the residents of Loughrea eagerly await a resolution that will restore the much-needed connectivity between their town and Galway City.
