Loughrea’s Walking School Bus returns

Loughrea’s Walking School Bus returns

The Walking School Bus is a new initiative launched in collaboration with Sustainable Energy West, Naomh Breandáin Credit Union, St Brendan’s Boy’s NS and St Ita’s NS. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage children to walk to school, reduce the heavy traffic going to the schools daily and to reduce carbon emissions.

The benefits for the children walking far outweigh travelling in a car. They get morning exercise, get time to chat to their friends on the way to school and they are changing their behaviours. In some household this may require a small bit more organisation, but I think you will agree this will be worth it for your child.

To make this initiative a success it requires volunteers and to ensure the safety of all children a volunteer needs to be garda vetted. This is a simple straightforward process. Simply ask your school for an application form and when you return this completed form to your school, they will look after the rest.

Now, we meet at Barrack St Car Park at 8.30am every morning. We have a small number of children we walk to school on time. We plan to have enough volunteers at designated meeting points in Caheronaun and Baunogue in the very near future. We are asking you as a parent to get involved in this initiative and by doing so you will be playing an active part in lowering our carbon footprint.

Ask your school for the Garda Vetting form today and join us in the Walking School Bus.
