Major Upgrade Approved for Loughrea’s Long Point Swimming Area

The popular Long Point swimming area in Loughrea, Co. Galway, is set for a significant upgrade following the approval of new facilities, including expanded toilet amenities and additional car parking.

Galway County Council submitted the proposal to An Coimisiún Pleanála in September 2024, with approval granted in mid‑May 2026 subject to six conditions.

Under the plans, two of the three existing entrances to the park will be closed, while the remaining entrance will undergo major improvements to better manage traffic and enhance overall access. A new shared active‑travel route along Lake Road is also included, providing safer infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

The development will feature three separate car park areas with a combined total of 155 spaces, along with designated trading zones and bicycle parking.

One of the most welcomed elements of the project is the expansion of toilet and changing facilities. Local councillors and residents have long highlighted the need for year‑round amenities at the swimming spot. The existing toilet and shower block will remain in place and will be joined by a new 86sqm single‑storey building offering toilets, showers, and an outdoor changing area.

Cllr. Mogie Maher noted that the plans allow for a small retail or food outlet on site, which could help ensure the toilets are supervised throughout the year.

Some elements originally proposed, such as alterations to the lake edge and beach, a circular viewing deck, and repairs to the old kayak and SUP slipway, were removed as part of the approval conditions. The Inspector’s Report stated that omitting these features would result in “negligible impacts on the conservation objectives of the SAC.”

Two submissions were received from local residents during the planning process. Concerns focused on preserving existing green space as a child‑friendly area rather than converting it into parking, avoiding any changes to the beach, and ensuring construction takes place during the off‑season.

With planning now approved, expressions of interest are open for the proposed retail space, marking the next step in bringing the redevelopment to life.
