Phase 3 of The Walks Project completed

Phase 3 of The Walks Project was funded by the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, administered by Galway County Council. The local contribution was made up of financial contributions and voluntary labour. Announcing on Facebook, The Walks Project said:

A BIG THANK YOU to Loughrea Anglers, Tiptop External Cleaning, people who did the clean up and everybody who helped in a voluntary capacity. A VERY BIG THANK YOU to all the individuals and businesses who contributed financially. THANK YOU to the businesses (Hopes & Sweeneys) who have boundaries with the sections of the Walks Wall that was restored this year. Your co-operation & generous contributions towards costs was very much appreciated! Finally, thank you for all the likes, nice comments on FB and in person. Over half way there now.

Given the ground conditions, it was the hardest section of The Walks Wall to do. The base of the wall had to be reinforced with concrete and steel and then tied into the ground at the back with special steel anchors. We had to engage the services of a structural engineer who specialises in conservation. There are not many about but we were lucky enough to find Chris Southgate, Southgate Associates who are based in Cork. Also, the contractors who had done Phases 1 & 2 were too busy to tender, so we were concerned about finding a suitable contractor for this specialist conservation job. Thankfully it worked out. Costello Masonry Conservation Ltd. based in Limerick and headed up by Joe Costello got the job. Hats off to his three excellent stone masons, Greg, Conor & Vinny. It wasn’t an easy job but they made a great job of it.
