Positive Response to Full Walkway Around Loughrea Lake

Positive Response to Full Walkway Around Loughrea Lake

A proposal to complete a full public walkway around Loughrea Lake has received a notably positive response from Galway County Council.

The concept, originally raised in 2004 by Councillor Moegie Maher during his time on the Town Council alongside Councillor Pat Hynes, has long aimed to create a continuous loop around the lake. Approximately 3km of the route has already been developed, but progress has been limited due to the absence of full agreement from all landowners along the remaining stretch.

To overcome this challenge, Councillor Maher has suggested the installation of a boardwalk in certain sections extending over the lake itself. This approach, he says, would allow the walkway to be completed in full, creating an estimated 7km loop.

While the Council acknowledged that environmental considerations and other potential barriers would need to be assessed, it agreed that the project would be a valuable and worthwhile addition to the town’s amenities.

The proposal is expected to generate further discussion as the feasibility of completing the long‑anticipated walkway continues to be explored.
