Roadworks on Gort Road Causing Chaos in Loughrea

Monday morning traffic in Loughrea descended into chaos due to ongoing roadworks on the R350 Gort Road, with multiple drivers voicing frustration over poor signage, last-minute diversions, and a lack of advance warning.

The disruption sparked concern from local representatives, with Senator Shane Curley posting on Facebook:

“Complaints coming in about roadwork traffic diversions causing chaos in Loughrea. Reported to the Senior Engineer and he is working on it.”

Residents and commuters didn’t hold back in the comments:

  • “No diversion sign in place until in town!!”
  • “They’re letting cars in before turning them back. It’s a joke.”
  • “It’s an absolute joke for lorries.”
  • “Traffic backed up around the first roundabout during the school run — accident waiting to happen.”
  • “No notice given or warning signs. Traffic lights were all wrong. Hope it’s sorted for tomorrow!”

Confusion Over Council Communication

A Galway County Council post dated 16 September included notice of Gort Road works scheduled for 18–19 September, but this information was only visible after expanding the full post, leading many to miss it. No dedicated or follow-up post specifically highlighting the Gort Road disruptions appeared until complaints started pouring in on Monday morning.

The latest update from Galway County Council confirms the continued works:

ROADWORKS:
Please be advised of the following road where Stop/Go or Closure will be taking place to accommodate road works between 22nd -26th September 2025.
Monday – Tuesday 22 – 23 /09/2025: R350 Gort Road, Loughrea
Wednesday – Friday 24-26/09/2025: Carrabane, Loughrea

The incident has led to renewed calls for improved and more prominent communication from the Council about roadworks, particularly when key routes are disrupted during peak times like the school run and morning commute.
