Loughrea Squash Club announce €40,000 in funding from Sports Capital and Equipment programme

Loughrea Squash Club are delighted to announce that we have received €40000 in funding from the Sports Capital and Equipment programme. On Friday, 11 February, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, and Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers, announced an overall package of €150 million in new capital grants under the 2022 Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP). Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, said: ‘Sport is crucial for all communities in Ireland. There was a record number of applications for these grants and the government responded with the most significant level of individual awards ever.’

Announcing the news on their Facebook page, Loughrea Squash Committee (Eoghan Lynch, Tomás Cooley, Martin Burke, Eamon Maher, Robert Reilly, Adrian Kelly) said: ‘Many thanks to all concerned in the Club committee for helping out with the application process. We must also thank Msgr. Geraghty in Loughrea Cathedral for all the help he gave us regarding advice on the use of the Temperance Hall. We are always thankful to the parish for the use of the court in the Hall. Finally, we have to thank Ciaran Cannon TD for all the help he gave us with the application and advice on how the grant application could be maximised to show the full potential of our facility. We are very appreciative of Ciaran’s efforts and his follow ups with the department on any of our requests.’

Speaking of the award of the grant Ciaran said: ‘I played squash in Loughrea many years ago, during the famous squash craze of the 90’s! It’s fantastic to see a whole new generation taking up the game and working to redevelop the courts and facilities. It’s been a pleasure to work with Loughrea Squash Club in securing these funds, and I’ve no doubt but that they will be used wisely. Congrats to all.’

Loughrea Squash Club hope to get started on the dressing rooms in the next few weeks, while they plan to get the court done in the quieter summer months.
